Silane USi-6120 – Methyldiethoxysilane (MDES)
Non-Organoreactive Alkyl Alkoxysilane for Specialty Intermediates & Hydrophobic Modification
CAS No.: 2031-62-1
EINECS No.: 217-982-3
Molecular Weight: 134.25 g/mol
Synonyms:
Diethoxymethylsilane; MDESSilane USi-6120 is a high-purity methyldiethoxysilane (MDES)—a non-organoreactive alkyl alkoxysilane featuring one inert methyl group and two hydrolyzable ethoxy groups. With lower crosslinking density than trialkoxysilanes, it serves as a key chemical intermediate in the synthesis of functional organosilanes and as a modifier for controlled hydrophobization in specialty formulations.
🧪 Product Description
Chemical Formula: CH₃Si(OC₂H₅)₂H
Chemical Structure:
![Structure: CH₃–SiH(OC₂H₅)₂]USi-6120 contains a reactive Si–H bond in addition to two ethoxy groups and one methyl group. This unique structure enables dual reactivity:
- The Si–H bond participates in hydrosilylation reactions with alkenes/alkynes (catalyzed by Pt)
- The ethoxy groups can undergo hydrolysis and condensation under acidic or basic conditions
Unlike coupling agents such as amino or epoxy silanes, USi-6120 is primarily used as an intermediate, not a direct surface treatment agent. Its main value lies in synthesizing more complex silanes with tailored functionality.
📊 Typical Technical Data

🏭 Key Applications
🔹 Intermediate for Functional Organosilane Synthesis
- Serves as a precursor in hydrosilylation to produce:
- Alkyl-, fluoro-, or polyether-modified silanes
- Silicone surfactants, adhesion promoters, and surface modifiers
- Enables precise molecular design of silanes with custom organic tails
🔹 Modifier in Silicone Polymers & Resins
- Used to introduce methyl and ethoxy functionality into silicone backbones
- Helps control molecular weight, viscosity, and reactivity during polymerization
- Can act as a chain terminator or end-capper
🔹 Controlled Hydrophobization Agent
- When partially hydrolyzed, forms low-crosslink-density networks that impart water repellency without brittleness
- Suitable for applications requiring flexible hydrophobic layers on inorganic surfaces
🔹 Reducing Agent & Crosslinker in Specialty Systems
- The Si–H group can act as a mild reducing agent in certain catalytic systems
- Participates in Moisture-cure or Pt-cure hybrid systems for coatings and sealants
📦 Packaging
Available in industrial-grade containers:
- 25 L pail
- 200 L drum
- 1,000 L IBC tote
All packaging is sealed to prevent moisture exposure and preserve Si–H reactivity.
⚠️ Safety & Storage
