USi-407 — Vinyltrichlorosilane (VTCS)
Highly Reactive Vinyl-Functional Chlorosilane for Coupling, Grafting & Surface Modification
CAS No.: 75-94-5
EINECS No.: 200-917-8
Molecular Weight: 161.49
Synonyms:- Trichlorovinylsilane
- Vinylsilicon trichloride
⚠️ Note: A highly reactive and moisture-sensitive silane—ideal for controlled industrial synthesis where rapid silanol formation is required.
📄 Product Description
USi-407 is a vinyl-functional chlorosilane featuring one polymerizable vinyl group and three highly reactive chlorine atoms bonded to silicon. Upon contact with trace moisture, it rapidly hydrolyzes to form trihydroxysilanol, which readily condenses with hydroxylated surfaces (glass, metals, minerals) or other silanols.
This extreme reactivity makes USi-407 particularly valuable in:
- Laboratory-scale synthesis of specialty silsesquioxanes and hybrid materials
- In-situ surface treatment of fillers under anhydrous conditions
- Grafting onto polyolefins (e.g., PE, PP) for subsequent moisture crosslinking
Compared to alkoxy silanes (e.g., VTMS, VTES), VTCS offers:
- Faster hydrolysis & condensation kinetics
- Stronger initial coupling to inorganic substrates
- Higher crosslink density potential
(Chemical structure: CH₂=CH–SiCl₃)
🔬 Caution: Due to HCl evolution during hydrolysis, USi-407 requires strict moisture control and corrosion-resistant handling systems.

🌐 Key Applications
🔗 Silane Coupling Agent for Composites
- Used to treat glass fibers, silica, clay, and other mineral fillers before compounding into:
- Polyolefins (PE, PP)
- Engineering plastics (polyesters, nylons)
- Rubber (EPDM, SBR, silicone)
- Enhances mechanical strength, moisture resistance, and interfacial adhesion
🧪 Grafting Agent for Moisture-Crosslinkable Polyethylene
- Reacts with polyethylene (often in the presence of peroxide) to introduce hydrolyzable Si–Cl sites
- After extrusion, exposure to moisture triggers crosslinking → PE-Xc (peroxide + silane crosslinked PE)
- Improves environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR) and thermal stability
🧬 Monomer for Specialty Copolymers
- Can copolymerize with ethylene, styrene, or acrylics to create functional polymers with built-in crosslinkable sites
- Enables development of adhesion-promoting resins or reactive compatibilizers
⚗️ Intermediate in Organosilicon Synthesis
- Precursor for vinyl-substituted silsesquioxanes, hybrid sol-gel coatings, and functionalized nanoparticles
- Used in R&D for high-performance optical, electronic, and ceramic precursor materials
📦 Packaging
- 25 L HDPE pail (with PTFE-lined cap)
- 200 L steel drum (dry nitrogen-purged)
- 1000 L IBC tote (specialty valve, moisture-sealed)
💡 All packaging is designed for anhydrous storage and corrosion resistance due to HCl generation risk.
🛡️ Safety & Storage
- Highly moisture-sensitive – reacts violently with water, releasing corrosive HCl gas
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from humidity, oxidizers, and bases
- Keep containers tightly sealed under dry nitrogen blanket when possible
- Shelf Life: 12 months from production date in original unopened containers
- PPE Required: Chemical-resistant gloves (butyl rubber), face shield, fume hood use, acid gas respirator if ventilation inadequate
- Always review the latest Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before handling
